Running your own Business
Three groups of Year 11 students in Business Studies and Economics took part in a Business simulation this term where they were involved in manufacturing a sporting good for sale in Australia and overseas.
The students had to form a company and elect a CEO to coordinate the various departments in the company and each group member had a leadership role in producing and marketing the product.
Students met regularly to discuss plant operations, employee requirements, dividend policy, sales and promotion. Their aim was to maximise sales and build market share while keeping costs at a minimum. The group also had to maintain or expand profit levels to ensure adequate dividend returns and a rising share price.
Despite rock eisteddfod, year 11 exams, Youth week and the 2 week TAFE Outdoor Education program, groups were able to enter their production decisions via the internet by Tuesday afternoon in most weeks and to date all companies are performing well due to strong export demand and well a priced and quality product.
The simulation was run by Australian Business Week and the students were able to participate due to a generous grant from Central West NSW Youth Transition Services Inc.

Members of Group 2 are pictured with mentor Jane Sullivan from Carrington House and CEO Sarai Edmonds discussing their quarterly manufacturing decisions.
