4/02/2008 - 'Career Crossroads' - 2008 Rural & Remote Careers Conference

'Career Crossroads' - the conference for all stakeholders in the careers field working with young people.

Wow! Where do we start to describe ‘Career Crossroads’.

As organisers, the conference far exceeded our expectations in every sense – from the fantastic speakers to the incredible social events and networking.  Being involved in producing such a well received event will go down as one of the most rewarding professional experiences that we have been privileged to be part of.  Ron, John, Suzie, Karen and myself would like to thank you, the delegates, for your part in making the event such a lively and energetic occasion.

On a somber note, it was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Compact LCP staff member Graeme Kelly on Friday 4 April in Parkes.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to Graeme’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.

Thank you to everyone who assisted in making the conference a success including staff at the Parkes Services Club, the Coachmans Hotel/Motel, Northparkes Mine, CSIRO Telescope, Country Energy Training Centre, Transtanks, STC Logistics, RICA James, the various accommodation providers and other supporting businesses.

A big thank you needs to go to Parkes Shire Council for their significant support of this conference, including graciously welcoming us all to Parkes with the delightful Civic Reception on Wednesday evening.

Thanks to our sponsors - CSU, TAFE NSW, Rex airlines, Career Advice Australia, and NSW Dept of Education.

Thanks also to all of the speakers and workshop presenters including Neil Inall, Karen Penrose, Jocellin Jansson, Karen Pisk, Dennis Overton, Doreen Conroy, Julia Strang, Mandy Sutherland, Giovanna Cox, Robyn Lang, Michael Clancy, George Witty, Kieran Duncan, Karen Murray, Geoff Warr, Lindy Wellsmore, Ben Bardon, Cheryl Howell and Loretta Blake.  Should you wish to contact any of the speakers for more information please do not hesitate to contact them directly via email addresses provided in the conference program, or email me at a.maynard@cwyts.com.au and I will do my best to put them in touch with you.

As was requested in a lot of your evaluation forms, we have sort permission from Karen Pisk to post a copy of her power point presentation on Careers on a Shoestring, so here it is (please note that this is a reasonably large file [6.8mb] - on a dial up connection it will take around 15 mins to download). If there are any other powerpoints or handouts you missed and would like posted, let me know and I will do my best to get them up here.

Whilst we here at CWYTS generally subscribe to the theory ‘what happens on conference stays on conference’, some things are just too good to keep under wraps – hence the photos and video footage!  We have way too many photos to post at once, but will be changing them regularly, so keep returning to see if there is any incriminating evidence on you!

Please don’t forget, if there is anything else you would like followed up after this conference, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Thanks again for making Careers Conference such a great experience!

We look forward to the next one J

Cheers

Angela.
